About NAT Grant

Second most asked question: Why write suspence thrillers?

Spy thrillers are the genre I love to read and therefore that kind of fast-paced, heart pumping stay-up-to-the-middle-of-the-night read is what I aim for. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from McGill University, my career in nursing fell into rather knife-edge, life and death experiences while working in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit and later when managing the Montreal General Hospital's Burn and Isolation Unit. I would not want to be involved in that kind of hands on painful, enriching yet heart-breaking work now, but it certainly prepared me to write. As well, I am very interested in science and technology. My husband is a scientist and that kind of top ranking resource you can't buy. We have travelled extensively which also has enabled me to add an international flavour to the thriller Race Series. I can't wait to finsh my third in the series, AN Inhuman Race. The suspence is killing me.

Most asked question: What does NAT mean?

My full name is Nancy Anne Tully Grant. My grandmother, Jean (Hamilton) Tully, suggested that another name be added to Nancy Anne Grant for obvious reasons. I’m glad she did. Now, people often call me NAT. Note that I removed the periods.

I grew up in Huntingdon, an historic settlement on the banks of the Chateauguay River in southern Québec. Once I came of age, I left my small town behind to attend Bishop's University. Originally I intended to study Marine Biology (I was totally in love with Jacques Cousteau), but fearing a life hidden in sterile laboratories instead of playing mermaid, I decided to follow in the footsteps of my mother, and transferred into the McGill Bachelors of Science (Nursing) Program. Windsurfing was my favorite pastime. Now, I just create a great splash as I fall.

As a nurse, I worked at the Montreal General Hospital in Surgical Intensive Care and five years later became the MGH’s youngest Head Nurse taking on the Burn and Isolation Unit. I came to admire the ability of the human body to survive under tremendous odds. Seeing masses of burnt human flesh and rotting wounds does something to one’s psyche; at least, it did to mine.

Luckily, I met my soul mate, Jon, who is my staunch advocate. After completing a Masters of Science in Nursing and a stint teaching at McGill’s School of Nursing, we headed to England for a year. This provided an idyllic setting for life changing experiences. I wrote short stories and developed a penchant for travel. We have since visited various parts of Europe, the Eastern Block, Brazil, China, the United States, South Africa and the Caribbean taking two to three international trips per year.

In Canada, I continued part-time in nursing and started writing. Finding short stories too short for my imagination, I turned to novel writing. Intrigue and espionage became my game. Thus the Race Series was born.

I foster my creative spirit by painting, gardening, travel, photography, cooking and, of course, windsurfing. And as of July 2007 — I RETIRED from Nursing and now plan to write, travel and have fun full time.
